Darjeeling Limited Review

Darjeeling Limited Movie ReviewDarjeeling Limited, starring Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman, is a movie that follows the tradition of being weird like The Royal Tenenbaums, Lost in Translation and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.

Directed by Wes Anderson, Darjeeling Limited is a movie about three brothers who have not spoken to each other for a year. To help them get past their troubled relationship, they take a trip to India to find spiritual guidance. The attractiveness of the movie stops there.

Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman are the stars of this movie in my opnion although you dont see them doing anything different compared to their earlier perfomances. Even if you are in a mood for a weird movie, be prepared to turn this movie off halfway as this movie is for die-hard Anderson fans.

This movie gets 5 “sweet limes” out of 10

The Nanny Diaries - Review by RNW

Sex and The City Movie ReviewAnother On Demand pic at my mercy.

Even if you have absolutely nothing better to do with your time, ie. the bathroom is spotless, you did laundry yesterday, and the lawn is growing at a snails pace, do not, I repeat, do not watch this movie.

The story is just plain boring, and I swear I’ve seen it a million times already. The acting… well if I HAD to, I could give credit to Laura Linney and Donna Murphy, but lackluster would be an understatement for the remainder.

I do hate to come down so hard on a movie, but even the girlie-girl, who exists somewhere inside of me thought that this movie was a flop. Wait, I just realised this movie’s first cousin, it’s Uptown Girls starring Brittany Murphy and Dakota Fanning, which atleast had style and a pot-bellied pig!

I give this movie 2 ‘harvard hotties’ out of 10 - and only because he was indeed a cutie.

Sex and the City - Movie Review by RNW

Sex and The City Movie ReviewAs with my Indiana Jones review, I cannot claim to be a member of this iconic following. While I’ve atleast seen episodes of SATC in passing, I am not up to speed on all of the ongoings of the characters from the series.I took in this movie with some girlfriends whose husbands refused to take them (presumably Reel Ninja could be a party to those husbands :) and just prior to the previews beginning I turned to the girls and asked if anyone knew how the series ended, just in case there was some necessary tidbit that would tie the series to the movie. Nothing too unexpected, even in my sporadic viewing.

I must share with you that I once overheard Sarah Jessica Parker’s face described as looking like a foot. That thought always makes me laugh. I was more interested in the delectable Chris Noth (Mr. Big), of the Law and Order series fame. Mr. Big did not disappoint… nor did any of the other core characters, all true to form.

There were quite a few chuckles and a sprinkle of boisterous laughter moments in the movie, but truly driven to the ladies in the crowd. I can’t imagine Reel Ninja busting a gut to the humour as I doubt he could relate.

If you’re a series fan, definitely spend the money and see it with some girlfriends… DO NOT drag your male partner, buddy, brother or otherwise… unless you’re planning on making it up to them immediately following the credits! :)

I give this movie 6.5 ‘Manolo’s’ out of 10.

Made of Honor Review

Made Of Honor Movie ReviewsOtherwise known as My Best Friend’s Wedding, starring Julia Roberts and Dylan McDermott.

Yes, it’s true, this movie has been recycled, but that’s the way of the future, isn’t it? A sign of the times as they say. How many new, original concepts can they create anyways? I figure in another 20-30 years everything will be either a remake, something about sex with robots/aliens or about genetic mutations. Otherwise, it’s all ‘been there, done that’.

This movie offered some chuckles, as it was funny to see the stiletto on the other foot, but not worth venturing out to the theatre and spending cash on, not in my opinion at least.

The movie had such a limited impact on me that I am struggling to remember the name of the female lead… this rarely happens. Patrick Dempsey however, is a bit tougher to forget, given his killer smile and ‘oh my god’ eyes.

The supporting cast was rather bland, aside from the role of Colin, played by Kevin McKidd, who has also starred in the series Rome and is rumoured to be coming up in Bunraku with Demi Moore.

I give this movie 4 trail mixes/potpourri dishes out of 10. If they had have called it My Best Friend’s Wedding Part 2 it would have scored higher.

Baby Mama - Review

Baby Mama Movie ReviewWith a heavy heart I ventured out to see this movie… expecting cliche after cliche and little to no story, typical chick flick. Who knew that Tina Fey could deliver so well. There are chuckles all over the place with this story of a clock-ticking-thirty-something-executive who enlists the assistance of a local yokel to surrogate her baby. Throw in an enterprising, yet dunce of a boyfriend (Sheppard) and an earthy, save-the-world-with-a-smoothie love interest (Kinnear) and you’ve got the combination for a well spent $9.

Greg Kinnear, Dax Sheppard and Amy Poehler really bring an A game to this comedy. Poehler is definitely someone I hope to be seeing again on the big screen.

I give this movie 6.5 ‘Super Fruity Owners’ out of 10.

Angels with Dirty Faces (1938)

Angels with Dirty Faces Movie ReviewRocky Sullivan and Jerry Connolly were tough kids who grew up together in the toughest part of New York — Hell’s Kitchen. Early on, Rocky gets sent to reform school, where he learns how to be a first class criminal. Jerry, who had escaped from the law, goes straight and becomes a priest. As adults, they reunite in the old neighborhood: Jerry works with the kids who, like he and Rocky, could end up on either side of the law. Rocky has returned looking for a safe place to stay till he can get back into his old racketeering organization — something that his old partner isn’t anxious to have happen.

James Cagney brilliantly plays Rocky Sullivan and his long time friend Pat O’Brien plays Jerry Connolly, his preacher friend. This movie also stars Humphrey Bogart in a minor role and the famous Dead end Kids, quite a cast. This movie is a great reminder of the classic age of movies where the plot and script were the paramount to the success of the film. Must-see movie.

I give this movie 7 ’slugs’ out of 10.

School for Scoundrels - Review

School For ScoundrelsA loser, Jon Heder, enrolls in a secret class that makes winners out of people like him. The class is taught by Dr. P, played by Billy Bob Thornton, and his assistant Lesher, played by Michael Duncan Clarke. Things get weird when Dr. P starts competing with Heder for the same girl.

Jon Heder plays the usual part he is most comfortable with - a loser, so we do not get to see anything special from him. Billy Bob Thornton is very unbelievable (not in a good way) in his role. You get the idea that he acted in this movie just to make some extra money and he never really had an interest in the movie or the script but then who could blame him.

The movie just keeps getting silly as every minute passes by. This movie had a lot of potential in the first 10 minutes but from then on, it starts losing it. There are 2 or so funny scenes throughout the whole movie that would make you laugh but you could probably catch that on youtube.

I would give this movie 4.5 ‘parking violations’ out of 10.

Reign Over Me - Review

Reign Over Me Movie ReviewI’ve come to realize that if Don Cheadle is a key character, I’m going to enjoy the movie. Whether that’s because he’s good, or he’s good and he chooses good movies, I can’t say… but I haven’t been disappointed in any of his work since seeing Hotel Rwanda.

The plot of this ‘Reign Over Me‘ is simple, an old friend of Alan Johnson (played by Cheadle) suffers unimaginable loss, and through the course of his suffering he truly loses himself. Johnson’s chance encounter with Charlie Fineman (played by Adam Sandler) not only offers an opportunity for Fineman to be saved but also for Johnson, who has been silently suffering for years of his own demise.

The supporting cast of Jada Pinkett Smith, Liv Tyler and Donald Sutherland, to name a few, were excellent. Pinkett -Smith plays Johnson’s smothering wife, Tyler a psychiatrist in Johnson’s office building, and Sutherland a criminal court judge… who oddly reminded me of God in his role.

I was anticipating a complete downer with this movie, and with Sandler in serious roles it definitely had that potential. However, this movie was well done with the expected sadness, doom and gloom, and with some funny flavouring thrown in too.

I happily give this movie 6.5 ‘veneers’ out of 10.

Georgia Rule: Movie Run Amuck

Georgia Rule Movie ReviewThe trouble with On Demand Video is that sometimes the selection is just plain desperate. That was the case the other day when I sat down to take in a movie. I flipped through the three screens of despair and decided on the lesser of all evils displayed, and went with Georgia Rule. Jane Fonda and Felicity Huffman were the only things that grabbed my attention in the brief synopsis… they were clever to leave out the lead, Lindsay Lohan.

The story revolves around an obnoxious teen, Lohan, who is abandoned in Idaho by her end-of-her-rope, mother for a summer of strict rules and no nonsense with grandma Georgia (Fonda).

Three things I found irritating about this movie were: Lohan’s atrocious acting, the needless negative portrayal of Mormons, and an ill placed kiss that just goes no where. I’ll leave it to you all to create your own list for this flick, if you can stomach sitting through an entire viewing.

I give this movie 3.5 “bars of soap” out of 10.

The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada - Review

The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada ReviewProduced, directed and starred by Tommy Lee Jones… a triple threat he is not on this one.

I thought that the storyline was fantastic, filled with raw emotions and scenes that would speak to even the toughest cynic.

I’m not sure that I can put my finger on why I don’t feel that this movie is done as well as it could be… possibly it’s that it’s got that country/western feel that I don’t tend to lean towards, or it’s the slowness of the story, or maybe it’s just that it felt too plain. This could have been a blockbuster… not that all blockbusters are deserving of praise, but it just needed something more.

However the story does drag you in… for that alone I’ll give this movie 5 “border crossings” out of 10.
