Reel Babies
![]()
Perhaps in the place you call home there is something similar. Here in our little piece of Canada, Empire Theatres, offers a program driven to new moms called Reel Babies. A fabulous concept really; a first run movie shown to an audience of new moms and teary-eyed babies, during daylight hours. It comes complete with changing tables, bottle warmers, and floor toys. What a bang up idea for moms who love movies, don’t you think?
Reel Babies has been offered here in Halifax for a couple of years now, and is becoming rather popular. Perspective movie-going moms subscribe their email address to Empire and a week before the bi-monthly movie date, they are offered three titles to vote for as the upcoming film choice.
The one negative… even after the couple of years that this program has been in existance, is that every time the wee one and I have gone to see a movie, the volume is never adjusted and every baby in the place bawls until one of the moms goes out and asks the tools running the movie to turn the freakin’ volume down! Holy frustrating Batman. Seriously, how many times does this have to happen before you catch on and turn the volume down BEFORE you flick the switch and roll the tape?!
End Rant.

Got something to say?
I know that it’s been running in Halifax ever since Empire Theatres (owned by Sobeys) bought out all the Famous Players in Atlantic Canada and a few across the rest of the country. I’m glad they bought them out and did a lot of renovations to revamp the cinemas in Halifax. I remember going to the theatre at Park Lane in my first year of university and it was gross! I took a year off and left Halifax. When I came back, things had totally changed (business name and quality of seats).
I’m currently in Ontario for the summer and I know that Cineplex has a similar outing for parents and their babies. I’ve never been because I’m not a parent, but can anybody go to the Reel Babies events or is it just parents and babies? Is it the same cost as regular movies? Maybe I’ll buy a baby doll in the fall and say…”Yep, I’m his/her father and I would like to buy a ticket!”
Park Lane…. were you ever to the Penhorn Cinemas before their renovations?? lol, ghetto.
My honest opinion on a guy showing up to Reel Babies without a kid… scary… as a mom, that’d be my first impression. I don’t know what the rules are persay, but I suspect it would raise a few eyebrows
I think it’s about 50 cents or a dollar more than regular matinee admissions. And believe me, it’s an acquired taste… trying to get into a movie with babies crying all around you.

LOL….Don’t worry…I will not be showing up!
I’ve seen the entrance of the theatre but never went inside. All of Penhorn Mall looks ghetto now, without Wal-Mart.
Very cool idea.
I like SizzlyP’s doll idea.
My mom just told me about some new TV show to help moms in training.
I would beat those tools running the booth. But then the sound of bawling kids is like nails on a chalkboard to me so it might get a bit bloody….
