After Marilyn Monroe, Its Jimi Hendrix’s turn - Sex tape surfaces

Jimi Hendrix Sex TapeAn alleged Jimi Hendrix sex tape has surfaced and it is being released by the adult entertainment company, Vivid Entertainment. Vivid Entertainment has reported that they obtained a copy of Jimi Hendrix’s sex tape from a memorabilia collector. Jimi Hendrix’s sex tape shows someone who closely resembles the rock star engaging in various sexual acts with two “foxy” women in a dim lit hotel room.

Jimi Hendrix’s longtime girlfriend during the 60s, Kathy Etchingham, looked at the stills from the 11 minute footage and told the New York Times: “It is not him.”, “His face is too broad and nose and nostrils too wide for Jimi.”

However, Vivid Entertainment have said that they consulted with several experts to authenticate the tape including one of Jimi Hendrix’s former lovers, Pamela Des Barres and Cynthia Albritton, better known as Cynthia Plaster Caster, who is famous for making plaster molds of celebrities’ genitals, including those of Jimi Hendrix.

School for Scoundrels - Review

School For ScoundrelsA loser, Jon Heder, enrolls in a secret class that makes winners out of people like him. The class is taught by Dr. P, played by Billy Bob Thornton, and his assistant Lesher, played by Michael Duncan Clarke. Things get weird when Dr. P starts competing with Heder for the same girl.

Jon Heder plays the usual part he is most comfortable with - a loser, so we do not get to see anything special from him. Billy Bob Thornton is very unbelievable (not in a good way) in his role. You get the idea that he acted in this movie just to make some extra money and he never really had an interest in the movie or the script but then who could blame him.

The movie just keeps getting silly as every minute passes by. This movie had a lot of potential in the first 10 minutes but from then on, it starts losing it. There are 2 or so funny scenes throughout the whole movie that would make you laugh but you could probably catch that on youtube.

I would give this movie 4.5 ‘parking violations’ out of 10.

Reign Over Me - Review

Reign Over Me Movie ReviewI’ve come to realize that if Don Cheadle is a key character, I’m going to enjoy the movie. Whether that’s because he’s good, or he’s good and he chooses good movies, I can’t say… but I haven’t been disappointed in any of his work since seeing Hotel Rwanda.

The plot of this ‘Reign Over Me‘ is simple, an old friend of Alan Johnson (played by Cheadle) suffers unimaginable loss, and through the course of his suffering he truly loses himself. Johnson’s chance encounter with Charlie Fineman (played by Adam Sandler) not only offers an opportunity for Fineman to be saved but also for Johnson, who has been silently suffering for years of his own demise.

The supporting cast of Jada Pinkett Smith, Liv Tyler and Donald Sutherland, to name a few, were excellent. Pinkett -Smith plays Johnson’s smothering wife, Tyler a psychiatrist in Johnson’s office building, and Sutherland a criminal court judge… who oddly reminded me of God in his role.

I was anticipating a complete downer with this movie, and with Sandler in serious roles it definitely had that potential. However, this movie was well done with the expected sadness, doom and gloom, and with some funny flavouring thrown in too.

I happily give this movie 6.5 ‘veneers’ out of 10.

Georgia Rule: Movie Run Amuck

Georgia Rule Movie ReviewThe trouble with On Demand Video is that sometimes the selection is just plain desperate. That was the case the other day when I sat down to take in a movie. I flipped through the three screens of despair and decided on the lesser of all evils displayed, and went with Georgia Rule. Jane Fonda and Felicity Huffman were the only things that grabbed my attention in the brief synopsis… they were clever to leave out the lead, Lindsay Lohan.

The story revolves around an obnoxious teen, Lohan, who is abandoned in Idaho by her end-of-her-rope, mother for a summer of strict rules and no nonsense with grandma Georgia (Fonda).

Three things I found irritating about this movie were: Lohan’s atrocious acting, the needless negative portrayal of Mormons, and an ill placed kiss that just goes no where. I’ll leave it to you all to create your own list for this flick, if you can stomach sitting through an entire viewing.

I give this movie 3.5 “bars of soap” out of 10.

Forgotten Woman - Dilip Mehta Documentary

Forgotten Women - Dilip Mehta DocumentaryDilip Mehta offers a real world view of the life some women are forced to live in rural India once their husband dies. Dilip’s documentary, Forgotten Woman, piggybacks sister Deepa Mehta’s Oscar nominated, Water (2005), which portrays a likeminded characterization of the life lived by the rural Indian widow, forced into poverty by her family and living in an ashram. Water is however, a story of fiction.

Daily life in a third world country, even for the affluent, can be shocking to those from first world countries, in general. Though you may drive around in a fancy car, there are people walking alongside your vehicle without shoes. You may be dressed in the finest silks, yet on every corner there is someone standing in just a cotton dhoti. Poverty surrounds you from all sides. With this in mind, I think it is difficult to be unbiased while watching a film like Water, or a documentary like Forgotten Woman.

The India of today is still the India of 100 years ago in some of the rural areas, for instance, arranged marriages still exist. By North American standards this may seem crazy, however, when dealing with two young adults (as opposed to young children who may be arranged), it makes complete sense. In a country of 2 billion people, imagine trying to find mister or mrs right. Families seek out spouses for their children, and if all are in agreement, the ‘children’ are wed. With this in mind, the wealth of a family would be passed down from father to son, so it is not so far fetched that if their son were to die, the wealth would be returned to his family as opposed to existing with his wife, who is merely an appendage of the family.

The casting out of the widowed wife by the husband’s family is where things seem to get extreme. My understanding is that if her husband has an available brother, she may marry him to retain her standing in the family, or she can throw herself on her husband’s funeral pyre (which is supposedly legally outlawed now), or she ends up cast out and at the mercy of an ashram.

Forgotten Woman follows the story of two widows in today’s era, who are trying to offer new hope to those in rural India, who have fallen at the mercy of a society who has chosen to leave them behind.

Forgotten Woman recently aired on Hot Docs, and hopefully will be rerun again. Definitely worth taking a look, helping to broaden horizons.

Its Oprah’s turn!!

Oprah Winfrey Invites Tom Cruise againOprah Winfrey is inviting Tom Cruise back for an interview and this time, it is to celebrate his 25 years in the business. The first part of the interview will be shot in her studio and the second part will be shot in Tom Cruise’s Telluride home. If some of you remember, Tom Cruise behaved a little immaturely by jumping on Oprah’s sofas during the show and confessing his love for Katie Holmes and then dragging the obviously embarrassed Ms. Holmes to the stage.

I bet Oprah is going to wear her dirtiest shoes for the interview so she can jump on HIS sofa. What do you think?

The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada - Review

The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada ReviewProduced, directed and starred by Tommy Lee Jones… a triple threat he is not on this one.

I thought that the storyline was fantastic, filled with raw emotions and scenes that would speak to even the toughest cynic.

I’m not sure that I can put my finger on why I don’t feel that this movie is done as well as it could be… possibly it’s that it’s got that country/western feel that I don’t tend to lean towards, or it’s the slowness of the story, or maybe it’s just that it felt too plain. This could have been a blockbuster… not that all blockbusters are deserving of praise, but it just needed something more.

However the story does drag you in… for that alone I’ll give this movie 5 “border crossings” out of 10.

Angels & Demons - Tom Hanks and Ron Howard return

Anges & Demons Movie with Tom HanksTom Hanks will return as Dr. Robert Langdon in Angels & Demons. Ron Howard return as the director and this time, he is bringing Naomi Watts with him to star as Vittoria Vetra.

Angels & Demons is Dan Brown’s third novel in which Robert Langdon, a Harvard symbologist, tries to solve a murder and prevent a terrorist act against the Vatican. Vittoria Vetra’s murdered father, a brilliant scientist, had created the world’s most powerful energy source and it has fallen into the wrong hands.

Shooting will start in June of 2008 and the movie is slated for release on 15th May 2009. If you have not read the book, I strongly suggest you do, it is said to be even better than DaVinci Code.
