Will Ian McKellen return as Gandalf in The Hobbit?

Ian McKellan Gandalf HobbitOn Ian McKellan’s website, a fan asked him if he was going to return as Gandalf in the 2 upcoming Hobbit movies. The wizard had to say this - “Encouragingly, Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh have told me they couldn’t imagine The Hobbit without their original Gandalf. Their confidence hasn’t yet been confirmed by the director Guillermo Del Toro but I am keeping my diary free for 2009!”

I personally cannot imagine anyone taking his place in the movies. Ian McKellan would be the familiar face in the Hobbit movies that the film makers would love to have and ensure box office success.

Update: It is confirmed that Ian McKellan is returning as Gandalf.

Oh, I hope so! I love the Lord of the Rings book and movies, and I think it would be great to have the same Gandalf for The Hobbit! I think it would help with the continuity of the stories. Plus, McKellan did a great job!
