Angels with Dirty Faces (1938)
Rocky Sullivan and Jerry Connolly were tough kids who grew up together in the toughest part of New York — Hell’s Kitchen. Early on, Rocky gets sent to reform school, where he learns how to be a first class criminal. Jerry, who had escaped from the law, goes straight and becomes a priest. As adults, they reunite in the old neighborhood: Jerry works with the kids who, like he and Rocky, could end up on either side of the law. Rocky has returned looking for a safe place to stay till he can get back into his old racketeering organization — something that his old partner isn’t anxious to have happen.
James Cagney brilliantly plays Rocky Sullivan and his long time friend Pat O’Brien plays Jerry Connolly, his preacher friend. This movie also stars Humphrey Bogart in a minor role and the famous Dead end Kids, quite a cast. This movie is a great reminder of the classic age of movies where the plot and script were the paramount to the success of the film. Must-see movie.
I give this movie 7 ’slugs’ out of 10.

Got something to say?
I love this film! I watched it first when I was only 8 or 9, I cried my eyes out.
Saw it again only a couple of months ago and it still chokes me up.
Favourite line - ‘Morning, gentlemen. Nice day for a murder’ - that line cracks me up.
hahaha, this movie has some great lines. I am going to start greeting people with “Whadda ya hear! Whadda ya say! “
Haha this always makes me think of Angels with Dirty Souls from Home Alone!
I’d have to agree; this movie is a classic with an awesome cast. This is one where a remake would be hard as hell as very few actors could pull it off as well the original cast..
